Washington Solar Tax Credits, Incentives and Rebates 2024 – MarketWatch
Although Washington has fewer solar incentives than some other states, the solar sales tax exemption, net metering programs and 30% federal solar tax credit still help residents save big on solar.
Washington Renewable Energy Sales and Use Tax Exemption
Incentive value: 100% of sales tax on solar photovoltaic (PV) systems
Frequency: Applied at the time of purchase
Washington exempts 100% of the sales tax on solar PV systems up to 100 kilowatts. The state sales tax exemption is applied to the total cost of solar system installation and equipment.
To qualify for this exemption, you must apply for a sales tax refund through the Washington State Department of Revenue (WA-DOR). Learn more about this program on the WA-DOR website.
Washington Renewable Solar Incentive Program
Incentive value: $0.16 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) generated by your solar energy system
Frequency: Ongoing for existing customers (new applications closed)
The Washington Renewable Energy System Incentive Program (RESIP) allowed residential-scale solar panel systems to earn $0.16 per kWh of energy generated, up to $5,000 per year. However, as of June 2021, the program is no longer taking applications for new participants.
The state reinstated the program in late 2022 to offer grants for community solar installations. However, individual homeowners are no longer eligible for incentives through this program.
